Full Description
This is one of three chapels located in Martin. This one was a Wesleyan Chapel, built in 1860, and it is now used as the village hall. It has a three-bayed gabled front of yellow brick with round-arched bays enclosing two tiers of windows. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
The site was visited in 2009. This chapel closed in 1936 when the congregation joined that of the Primitive Methodists in the chapel across the road (see PRN 62285). There are records of three Wesleyan chapels in Martin; the first chapel may have been built in 1809 and was replaced by a new chapel in 1832 which was subsequently replaced by this chapel in 1860. It is unclear if the earlier chapels were on the same site. The extant building has classical pilasters with continuous moulded stone imposts and a raised gable with stone finial and a broad verge resting on brackets with a vesica tablet '1860' and a lunette in the gable. The lower tier of openings of the front has been refenestrated. The side elevations have round-arched windows with radiating lights and coloured glass. The eaves have a dentil corbel table. There is a lower gabled cell to the rear and gabled annexes are attached to east and west. A former Sunday school room survives on the opposite side of the road, (see PRN 65886). It has a gault brick front gabled elevation with classical terminal pilasters and nailhead in the gable verge. It is rendered and pebble-dashed and refenestrated. The eaves cornices have small brackets. {7}{8}
