Full Description

A scatter of Romano-British pottery, dating from the mid-2nd century to the 4th century, was recovered during a fieldwalking survey. The scatter was thought to indicate the location of a small settlement. {1}{2} A number of unstratified Romano-British pottery sherds were recovered during trial trenching at TF 2654 1770. These sherds were recovered in the adjacent field to the above field walking survey, and it is thought that this area was not part of the main settlement. {3}{4} Archaeological evaluation recorded several ditches and pits across the site with pottery, fired clay, animal remains, a loom weight and possible wall plaster. These indicate the presence of a domestic settlement dating mainly to the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Some of the pottery and wall plaster may indicate that areas of the settlement may be of a relatively high status. {5}{6}
