Full Description

Two bronze palstaves with a shield ornament below the stop ridge were found south of the Witham, and north of the sewage farm. Now in the British Museum. {1}{2}{3} Two flanged palstaves with shield ornament below the stop ridge, from the same mould, found on the sewage works on the north of the city and now in the British Museum [recorded as from Lincoln but the sewage plant that was built in Canwick to the south of the river is more likely]. C. W. Phillips also seems to record a single palstave as well as a pair of palstaves in the British Museum. {4} The Ordnance Survey also records a bronze palstave from Lincoln (above hill) approximately 5.75 inches long found in 1867 and now in the British Museum (accn no.92, 2-16 (1-2)), while P. Davey records this axe as found 'in the sewage works "above"? the hill in about 1887', with British Museum accession no.92, 2-16, 1. It seems likely that these refer to one of the two palstaves above. Davey has perhaps conflated the two palstaves because, coming from the same mould, his source only illustrated one palstave. However Davey also records two palstaves with shield ornaments from Canwick (now lost) at this grid reference that are perhaps also these artefacts. The OS record has perhaps mistranscribed the year of discovery since the Lincoln City Corporation sewage plant to the south of the river was under construction in about 1887. There is no sewage plant above Lincoln. The accession number given by the OS card would perhaps indicate two objects under this number in the British Museum of which Davey records the first. {5}{6}
