Full Description

A number of field-names indicate the presence of an assembly place in the vicinity of TF 038 678 for the wapentake of Langoe. The Tithe Award for Branston parish (1847) gives 'Spelligate Close' as the name of the field at TF 038 676, adjacent to the northern parish boundary with Heighington and east of Potterhanworth Road. Earlier forms of this name include 'Spellagate Closes and Lane' (1766), 'Spellow Gate' (1680), 'Spellowgate' (1605), 'Spelow(e)gate' 1579, 1601, and 'Spellougate'. Cameron suggests that these derive from the Old English 'spell' and either the Old English 'hlaw' (mound/hill) or 'hoh' (a spur of land). Immediately north of here in Heighington parish a similar group of names occurs. The first edition OS map marks a track at right angles to Potterhanworth Road (TF 034 678 - TF 037 679) as Spelhill Lane. A Heighington Terrier refers to land lying 'in the Spella Hyll, -Dayle, -Wonge.' Other documents refer to similar names. Since in the terrier 'Spella Wonge' is said to abut 'upon a hie way against the north and upon the field of Branston against the sowth', it may be suggested that these fields lay between the parish boundary and the track formerly known as Spelhill Lane. {1}{2}{3} The 'hill' element of the name Langoe may refer to either a natural hill or a barrow. There is a low rounded natural rise which is visible on the ground at this point, but it may also refer to a barrow which has now been ploughed out. {4}
