Full Description

The settlement of Little Humby seems to have been first documented separately in 1539, although it is possible that it was included with Great Humby, located nearby, which was documented in the Domesday Book. Certainly, archaeological investigation in the village has revealed earlier remains. {1}{2} The hamlet of Little Humby is recorded as having seven households in 1563. The 19th century population was 81 in 1801, peaking at 122 in 1891, and fell to 82 in 1901. {3}{4} Earthworks of medieval ridge and furrow surrounding Little Humby were identified on aerial photographs by the National Mapping Programme. {5} A pit containing 13th and 14th century pottery was recorded during a watching brief at The Chestnuts (TF 0026 3314). Unstratified pottery was also recovered, possibly dating to the 9th century. {6}{7} Three unstratified medieval potsherds were recovered during a watching brief at Red House Farm. {8}{9}
