Full Description
This 2nd century Roman saucepan or trulla was included in a collection of Romano-British objects, belonging to Rev W.H. 'Jumbo' Mills, that was loaned to Louth Museum in 1895. It is not known where the objects came from. The saucepan was taken to Leicester Museum Conservation Laboratory in 1964; there is a full description and drawings in the 1964 Journal of Roman Studies. It has concentric rings on the base, cable mouldings and inscriptions on the handle. It disappeared for 20 years, but is now back in Louth Museum. {1}
The vessel is in a good condition, though has a slight flaw on one side. The handle is bordered by a cable-mould and termninates in a circular expansion with raised cable-mould around a central perforation. A weathered, moulded stamp is on the handle and reads 'MLNfEC', thought to mean 'M(arcus) L(...) N(…) fec(it)'. A graffito is punched on the handle, partly overlapping the stamp, and reads '? CL SENIORIS ANNI', thought to mean 'From the century of Claudius Senior, (property of) Annius'. {2}{3}
A second punched graffito was discovered after the saucepan had been cleaned with acid. It is located underneath the handle, and reads 'COH IIII BRE', thought to mean 'The Fourth Cohort of Breuci'. This army unit is attested in 122 AD and was active in the north of Britain until at least the 3rd century. This find suggests that the unit may have been in Lincolnshire before 122 AD. {4}
