Full Description
PRN 60610
During fieldwalking as part of the Fenland Survey, a scatter of Late Neolithic flint implements were recovered from the southern tip of a sand island (though the site may extend further northwards) and from the surface of adjacent later marine clays. Flints from the marine clays had been incorporated into the topsoil by ploughing through the clays into the sand beneath. Environmental evidence suggests the Late Neolithic landscape around Dogdyke was dominated by increasingly wet conditions and peat formation over lower lying ground.{1}
During the Fenland Evaluation Project, although fieldwalking was not undertaken due to cropping, lithics were noted on a paleosol sealed by marine clays.{2}
As part of the Fenland Management Project, fieldwalking and trial excavations were carried out on this site. Carbonised remains of tree root systems found in Test Pit 18 during excavations were truncated by Prehistoric plough marks, and early second millenium BC potsherds including sherds of collared urn were found on the paleosol. No sherds later than this were recovered (until the post-medeival period); in combination with the environmental evidence, this suggests site abandonment due to increasing wetness in the early Bronze Age.{2}{3}{4}
