Full Description
Cropmarks of a rectangular enclosure, thought most likely to be the remains of a Neolithic mortuary enclosure, to the south of Croxby Pond Plantation, Thorganby. The enclosure measures 75m by 30m and is defined by a single ditch. Opposed entrances in the north-east and south-west sides support the interpretation of a mortuary enclosure. The eastern half is slightly larger than the western half. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}{2]{3}{4}
This enclosure is situated on the lip of a tributary valley of the Waithe Beck. It is aligned on a north-west to south-east axis, with the long axis traversing the contours. It is rectangular, measuring 98m by 38m, and with markedly angular corners and formal entrances at the north and south ends. The two halves of the north side are out of alignment and splayed out slightly. Field walking conducted between 1988 and 1993 revealed no surface traces. Although suggested as the remains of a possible long barrow, the size and form of the feature is unusual for Lincolnshire, and more akin to a minor cursus, though that interpretation also remains uncertain. An explanation as the remains of a Neolithic mortuary enclosure remains the interpretation thought most likely. {5}{6}
