Full Description

Neolithic long barrow at Ash Holt, to the east of Cuxwold. The barrow lies within dense woodland, and is comprised of a mound of chalk rubble, with signs of previous disturbance at the southern end. It measures approximately 78ft long, between 18 to 38 ft wide, and between 4ft 6" to 1ft 6" high. {1}{2}{3}{4} The barrow is located about 1.4 km east of Cuxwold, and immediately to the west of the Thorganby-Swallow road, from which it is clearly visible. It stands at the upper end of a minor valley running down to the Croxby and Waithe Becks. It survives well, and is approximately 26m long and between 5 and 16m wide with a south-south-west to north-north-east alignment. It stands to a height of about 1.5m at the wider, southern end, gradually tailing off along its length to about 0.3m. There is evidence of some disturbance at the southern end but it is otherwise apparently undisturbed. The quarry ditch cannot be seen but is thought to survive buried beneath the present ground surface. The former parish boundary respected the existence of the mound, deviating slightly from an otherwise straight course, to include it in Swallow parish, although the wider extent of the monument now lies across the boundary between Lincolnshire and North-East Lincolnshire. Ash Holt long barrow is the most northerly of a group of similar monuments located along the valley of the Waithe Beck, an association that poses wider questions concerning patterns of Neolithic settlement and mortuary practice. {5} This long barrow is in the form of a trapezoidal mound, occupying a slope position, facing east, on a ridge separating two prominent dry valleys running off to the north and south. {6}.
