Full Description

A round barrow 10ft high with a 90ft diameter. It has large trees growing on it and is surrounded by arable land. {1}{2}{3} The mound stands 3m high in a cultivated field, with several mature trees on top and smaller ones round the edge. There is long grass and thistle in the middle and shorter grass and nettles around the base. There is no animal damage and very little erosion. {4}{5}{6} The barrow yielded a skeleton, 4 skulls and other human and animal bones, charcoal and ashes and unbaked 'British' and Roman pottery fragments when opened by Trollope. {7} Scheduled bowl barrow, including the earthwork and buried remains, which will retain valuable archaeological information. It is located 550m east-south-east of Bully Hill Farm, prominently situated above the valley of the River Rase. It is tree-crowned, stands to a height of 3m, and is circular. It is thought that the encircling ditch, from which material for the construction of the mound would have been quarried, survives buried beneath the present ground surface and this is included in the 5m margin around the base of the mound. The discovery of Roman pottery demonstrates activity at, and interest in, the site well beyond the period of its initial construction. It is one of a number of Neolithic and Bronze Age burial mounds associated with the route of the prehistoric trackway now formalised as High Street. The frequency of these sites attests to the continuing ritual significance of the area during the Neolithic and Bronze Age periods and poses important questions concerning the patterns of prehistoric settlement. {8}{9}
