Full Description

Stamp's Mill is a small tower mill which was built in c.1822, and is shown on Ordnance Survey maps of 1824 and the 1830 Greenwood map. It worked by wind until c.1938 and then by engine for a number of years. The cap and two remaining sails were taken off in the early 1950's, and it now stands abandoned in a pasture, roofed over, and with the doors and windows blocked up. It had four spring shuttered sails, which although they were fixed to a cross in the normal manner, were very unusual in this area for being mounted on half-stocks, possibly a way of using a pair of second-hand sails from a mill fitted with a canister wind shaft, or indeed of using existing sails when the old wooden windshaft was replaced. The fantail had been blown off, and for many years the mill worked without it, being hand-wound when necessary. There were once four pairs of stones, of which three remain, two French and one Grey. The tentering gear is missing, as are the Governers, which were mounted directly on the stone spindles. Most of the upper gearing is thought to remain although as access is impossible, this cannot easily be verified.
