Full Description

St Chad's is essentially an Early English type church. It has an Early English tower and nave arcades, there is also some Decorated and Perpendicular work. The chancel was restored in 1856, C.H.Fowler built a vestry and organ chamber in 1901 and in 1914 a south porch was added. The church is constructed in coursed limestone rubble with slate roofs and stone coped gables. The 13th century unbuttressed tower has a battlemented parapet. Inside there is a carving of St Chad and at the west end of the south aisle there is a small glazed cupboard containing a small leather medieval chalice case. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2}{3}{4} During a site visit to the church to assess the archaeological impact of removing and replacing pew platforms, the former nave floor was observed. This consisted of a dry friable mortary material, which may have been the base for tiles or flagstones. It is thought that there are likely to be burials present beneath the floor as the practice of burial within the church continued into the 19th century. {5} Archaeological investigations and assessment at St Chad's Church, Dunholme were undertaken by Naomi Field Archaeological Consultancy in May 2009 and February 2010 during the removal of pew platforms. Sleeper walls which are possibly foundations of the original nave north wall were revealed. Flagstones which predate the north aisle were also found. {6}{7}
