Full Description
Water tower to the north-west of Bardney. It is of two storeys, and roughly 38ft high, with an 8ft iron tank on top. The tank has a curved cover, raising the height a further 3.5ft, making the total height approximately 49.5ft. The tower is largely of red brick, laid in and English Bond, with a blue brick plinth and three blue brick bands, equally spaced. There are iron framed windows at the ground floor, two to the north, two to the south, and one to the west. The east elevation at ground floor level was not available for inspection due to a hay store having been built onto it here. All the openings are under brick arches, with the entrance door to the west elevation. The upper floor has circular openings to the west, north and east. The south side has an access door to a raised platform, from which rises an iron ladder to the top of the tank. {1}{2}
The water tower was built c.1903 and was fed from nearby boreholes. These boreholes supplied the village's water until 1938, when a new piped water mains supply from Welton was installed. {3}
A site visit as part of a Heritage Impact Assessment in 2022 included a photographic survey of the structure prior to a proposed change of use to residential, including alterations to the fabric of the tower. Corrugated metal sheds had been abutted against the tower during the 1960s, however the fabric of the tower has been left largely intact despite some degredation. {4}
