Full Description

A likely post-medieval, rectangular quarry pit is marked in this location on the 1st edition 6" Ordnance Survey County Series map. The feature is labelled as an 'Old Quarry' by the time of the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map, suggesting it had gone out of use by the time of the later map. {1}{2} The quarry is believed to have been re-opened during the Second World War, when chalk was extracted to build a new runway at Binbrook airfield. The quarry was backfilled shortly afterwards, and the site has since been used to house aviation communications equipment, installed c.1980. {3} The former quarry is still visible as a largely infilled earthwork, on the Google Maps aerial imagery layer. {4}
