Full Description

A ploughed out long barrow, visible on aerial photographs. It is aligned north-west to south-east, with a causeway at the northern end and thickened side ditches. {1}{2}{3}{4} This long barrow occupies a slope position on a spur, facing north-east, towards the head of the valley of a tributary of the Waithe Beck. It is aligned north-north-west to south-south-east, and its long axis runs parallel with the contours. It is an oblong-shaped enclosure, with curved corners and a causeway on the north-west side. {5}{6} The trapezoidal ditch encloses an area about 53m by 29m, within which there may once have been an earthen mound. Structures and deposits relating to mortuary activity within the ditch will survive as buried features. A causeway interrupts the ditch circuit to the north. The widening of the side ditches is thought to indicate recutting, suggesting that the barrow continued to be a focus of attention for some time after its construction. The barrow is one of a number of similar monuments associated with the head of the Waithe Beck and with High Street which originated as a prehistoric trackway. {7}{8}
