Full Description

A group of at least 6 Romano-British pottery kilns was discovered in this lcoation, during field walking to the north-west of Claxby. Most of the kilns had been badly damaged by ploughing, although one had been protected to some degree by an overlying hedge, and was sufficiently well preserved to justify its excavation in 1973. The kiln was orientated on an east to west axis, with the oven to the west. The kiln was built of clay, with sandstone, limestone and chalk elements. The oven floor had 3 pedestals, on which kiln bars would have rested to support the pottery to be fired. Several experimental findings of a modern replica kiln were also conducted on the site. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
