Full Description
Cropmarks of two probable ploughed-out Neolithic long barrows, at Foxendale Hill, West Ashby. Visible as curvilinear, ditch-defined oblong enclosures, with straight sides, rounded ends and traces of internal features. The south-western feature is larger, measuring roughly 50m by 20m, whilst the smaller north-eastern feature measures roughly 35m by 10m. Identified on aerial photography examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1}{2}{3}{4}
The features at this location were scheduled in April 1996, as the buried remains of two Neolithic long barrows. They sit 90m above sea level, on the western slope of a spur between the River Waring and a tributary of the River Bain. Although not visible on the ground, they appear as rectangular enclosure cropmarks on aerial photographs. The southern barrow measures about 66m by 30m and is aligned south-east to north-west, while the other is about 42m by 20m and is aligned north to south. These are thought to be the simpler forms of long barrows that occur in Lincolnshire, with only a low covering of scraped earth over the central ditched mortuary enclosure, rather than the construction of a large mound. For the full description and the legal address of this scheduled monument please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {5}{6}
Both long barrows occupy a slope position, facing west, overlooking the head of the West Ashby beck. The more southerly barrow is aligned south-east to north-west, and is a trapeziform enclosure with slightly convex terminals, measuring roughly 53m by 18m (narrowing to 12m). The soilmarks show a prominent chalky spread on the interior of this enclosure which is overlain by lines of former ridge and furrow. The second, more northerly barrow is aligned north-north-west to south-south-east, and is a small oblong enclosure measuring roughly 28m by 12m. The long axes of both barrows run parallel with the contours. Field walking conducted over btoh barrows revealed no surface traces or finds. {7}{8}
