Full Description

Cropmarks of a possible ploughed-out long barrow, identified on a Paul Everson aerial photograph of 1979. The feature is aligned on a north-east to south-west axis, and is of a trapezoidal or wedged shape. {1}{2}{3} The monument appears as a cropmark trapezoidal enclosure aligned north-east to south-west, delineated by a ditch measuring about 42m by 26m. The ditch is not thought to be broken by a causeway, a form representing a simpler type of this monument class in which the enclosure set aside for mortuary activities was not elaborated by the construction of a large earthen mound. Structures and deposits associated with these features will survive as buried features. The long barrow is one of a number of similar monuments associated with the valley of the Waithe Beck and the River Bain, and with High Street which originated as a prehistoric trackway and which lies approximately 800m to the west. For a full description see the scheduling document 27852. {4} The long barrow is situated on level ground, at the head of a valley of a tributary of the Waithe Beck. It is aligned east to west, faces north-east, and is east of the ridge summit and High Street ridgeway. Its long axis runs parallel to the contours. It is a short, squat, trapeziform enclosure; the dimensions are not consistent with other members in this group. {5}{6}{7{8} The long barrow 530m west of Moor Farm was first scheduled in 1996, and the scheduling was revised in 2019. It has not been excavated. The barrow cannot be seen on the ground but is clearly visible on aerial photographs as a cropmark and soilmark in an arable field to the south of a small plantation known as Far Dickey Crook. The barrow appears as a trapezoidal enclosure aligned east to west with maximum dimensions measuring 35.5m by 23m. {9}
