Full Description

A hoard of silver Roman denarii was found in 1934, in a field called 'The Bog', to the south-west of Swaby. The hoard was contained within an earthenware jar, and comprised 178 coins, ranging from Marcus Antonius to Hadrian. {1}{2}{3}{4} 'On the 27th of June, 1934, a waggoner named Alfred Burton of South Ormsby, rolling a field after ploughing in the parish of Swaby, 8 miles south of Louth, Lincolnshire, found a hoard of Roman silver coins at the bottom of an earthenware jar, broken in two.' All of the coins were silver denarii, with a total of 178 coins ranging from Mark Antony to Aelius Caesar (43 BC - 138 AD) being recorded. {5}
