Full Description

Built in the early 19th century, this mill worked until a sail was lost in 1947. The sails and cap were dismantled in 1949, with two of the sails later being re-used at Heckington Mill (see MLI82961). The mill originally had four patent sails driving twhree pairs of stones (one pair of French stones, and two pairs of grey stones). The building was converted into a private house in the 1960s, with all the internal machinery being removed during the conversion. {1} Tower mill built in the early 19th century, with late 19th century alterations. Built of red brick with moulded eaves and battlements, the latter rebuilt in the late 19th century. The tower is of threee storeys, with the main plank doorway entrance on the west side with a small casement window to each storey above that. Further casement windows in the same pattern are to both the north and south sides. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate entry in the National Heritage List for England. {2}{3} The building is often locally known as Picker's Mill, after the family which operated the mill for approximately the last 50 years of its working life. The family ran an associated bakery business from the same site. Power at the mill was supplemented in 1905 with the addition of a large, stationary oil engine, which continued the occasional millig on the site after the storm damage of 1947 led to the removal of the ogee cap and sails. The bakery continued to operate until 1959, after which the building was converted into a private residence. {4}{5}{6}
