Full Description
A hoard from Caythorpe, 4 socketed celts, 1 fragment of celt, 1 complete spearhead, 1 point of a spearhead, 1 broken point of a leaf-shaped arrowhead, 3 pieces of metal. All but one celt are damaged so it is presumably a founder’s hoard. It probably came from ironstone digging at Caythorpe.
There is a photograph of the hoard in the parish file.
Correspondence to the museum (in 1959) suggests that not all of hoard came to Museum. Some was scattered prior to 1909. It has been suggested that other pieces from this hoard are in Wollaton Park Museum including 2 or 3 sword fragments and 4 socketed axes. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
A hoard of bronze objects dating to the late Bronze Age and found at Caythorpe but presented to two different museums as two separate groups. The first group comprised seven socketed axeheads and axe fragments, two socketed spearheads, part of a sword or knife, a casting jet and a fragment of sheet bronze. These objects were found in 1884 and presented to Lincoln Museum in 1909. The second group was recovered from overburden, below surface soil, at Caythorpe Ironstone Mines and was presented to Wollaton Hall Museum, Nottingham in 1890. This group comprised four socketed axeheads, five fragments of sword or knife blades and part of a socketed spearhead. The second group of objects was transferred to Lincoln Museum in 1971 at which point parts of a broken socketed axehead and a broken knife blade were found to fit items from the first group exactly. It is reasonable to assume that these objects all belonged originally to the same deposit. {8}
The most likely findspot is in the stone quarry in Caythorpe parish. This quarry is shown as an active quarry on the 1888 Ordnance Survey map centred at SK 944 479. Other stone pits in the parish are marked as 'Old Stone Pit' and so are probably not active quarries at this time. {9}
