Full Description

Moated site lying on high plateau to the south east of 16th century manor house [PRN 33687]. Clearly site of manor before its removal to present site in or around 1568. Moat ditches are deep 1.5m in depth, overgrown but in good condition. The interior has what appear to be several platforms which may mark the site of former buildings. Under pasture 9/1976. {1} In 1086 the land at Bassingthorpe was held by Ivo Taillebois. In 1545 the manor was inherited by Thomas Coney from his father, and inventories of the period indicate that a substantial house existed on the site. The manor house is believed to have been moved from the moated island to its present position, north of the moat, during the 16th century. The remains of the moated site now take the form of a series of earthworks and buried deposits. {2}
