Full Description
A non-standard, square concrete pillbox at the southern end of Monks House Lane. {1}
Due to its unusual design and construction materials, this pillbox is believed to have been built at a very early stage of the Second World War, and before the other defences in the area were constructed. Whilst the exact date of construction is not known, it is believed to have been around May of 1940, before the design of pillboxes became standardised. The concrete walls of this structure are 36" thick, allowing it to withstand attacks from German tanks of the early war period. It is believed that the box would have been manned for most, if not all of its period of service, by the Home Guard. {2}
