Full Description
Cropmarks and soilmarks of a Neolithic long barrow, visible on an aerial photograph taken in 1999, of this area to the south of Dally Acre Bottom, Burgh on Bain. The barrow is sited on a north-east facing slope, overlooking the River Bain. It is aligned along the contour, giving it a north-west to south-east orientation, and measures 49m by 20m, with the broader end facing south-east, down the valley. {1}
The barrow was visible as cropmarks on more recent aerial photographs, taken in 2010. It appeared largely as described above, though with the broader end towards the south-east appearing to be the result of reworking in the Bronze Age to form a round barrow, visible as a circuit of ditch with a diameter of 16m. The long barrow was sited on a natural spur overlooking the River Bain, and was orientated north-west to south-east, with maximum dimensions measuring 50.5m by 25m. Cropmarks of numerous pits of uncertain date were also visible in the surrounding field, most of which appeared to concentrate in or around the barrow. The association of the pits with the barrow remains tentative, however, with a natural, geological origin for the pit features also being possible. {2}
