Full Description

Sutton Grange was a probable 19th century farmstead which had become Grange Hotel by 1905. {1}{2} The hotel underwent major renovations that were completed July 1916. By this point the hotel had been renamed to 'Grange and Links Hotel'. {3} Part of the original building, as seen in early Ordnance Survey maps, had been conserved. However, the majority of the buildings had been altered or exteneded. The complex after the 1916 alterations comprised two buildings. The L- shaped northereastern building had the longer part of its L shape demolished and reconstructed, the shorter part was probably part of the original 19th century building. The southwestern building was much larger and heavily altered the original plan of the building it replaced. {4} These two buildings were connected at some point in the mid to late 20th century. The larger and main soutwhestern range is two storeys high and constructed of rendered brick. It has an irregular plan and a hip and valley tiled roof with multiple chimney stacks. The main entrance is via a brick porch with a pitched roof and supported by two columns. The overall style of the building has Neo-Tudor and Arts and Craft influences. {5} The hotel closed in September 2018 and was sold by July 2020 with planning permission for a new development consisting of 13 houses and a 20-bedroom hotel. The building will be demolished if the owner proceeds with approved planning permission design. {6}
