Full Description

Former schoolhouse. Two storey building of coursed stone, under pitched gabled and hipped roofs of slate. Three ridge stacks. Two small single storey extensions, one gabled and one lean-to, both likely 19th century. {1}{2} White's 1872 Trade Directory states that the Free School in Burton Coggles was founded by Sir M. J. Cholmley in around 1860. {3} An article in the Grantham Journal, written when the school closed in 1982, suggested that the school was first opened in 1851, with the present school building erected in 1880. By the time the school closed, it had only 9 pupils. {4}
