Full Description

Former school. The 1904 OS map of Colsterworth shows the school in a single L-plan building. The two wings of the building have since been converted into detached houses, with a section of the structure demolished. The building running parallel to School Lane is a two storey red brick building, with a building scar on the east elevation, under a pitched gabled tile roof. A buttress on the north elevation holds a datestone reading '1823'. One tall red brick lateral stack. The western elevation is coped in stone. The eastern building, formerly the base of the 'L', is built of coursed limestone rubble, under a pitched gabled tile roof. Ashlar quoins on the building corners. There is evidence that the building may have been reroofed; the northern gable end is composed of a different stone to the wall beneath. Above the door on the east elevation is a dedication plaque reading 'NATIONAL SCHOOL Founded by EDMUND TURNOR Esq. 1824'. The schoolmaster's house is to the rear of these buildings (MLI95315). {1}{2} White's 1856 Trade Directory states that the building was at the time being run as a National School. Edmund Turnor bequeathed £1000 in trust in 1829 to pay for the schoolmaster's salary, and for fuel and maintenance of the school. The school accommodated for the education of children from Colsterworth, Woolsthorpe, North and South Stoke, and Skillington parishes. The 1872 Directory states that the school was in a 'most efficient state' and had recently been enlarged and improved; this is possibly when the red brick wing was added. The Rev. Charles Turnor gave an endowment of £45 a year to the school. {3}{4}
