Full Description

The Unicorn Inn is a two-storey red brick public house constructed in 1937. Parapet walls lead to the hipped slate roof with a chimney stack to the rear and another to the northern end. Painted oversized brick or concrete bands line the bottom of each floor. The front of the building has five bays with two bay windows flanking the central entrance door to the ground floor, with a side-door to the left and a small window to the right. The first floor of the façade has a unicorn motif to the centre which is banded by two modern casement windows at each side. A public house existed on the site since the mid-19th century. {1} There is documentary evidence of a Unicorn Inn in Boston at the end of the 18th century which was possibly located on the same site as the current Unicorn Inn. {2} The location of The Unicorn Inn is approximately 100 metres away from the Grand Sluice, which was constructed in 1766. {3} It is possible that The Unicorn Inn was established around the time that the sluice was constructed, to cater to people involved in navigation or engineering activities.
