Full Description

Former school and village hall. Single storey brick building with two stages of construction, in Flemish Bond and English Garden Wall Bond, under pitched gabled roofs of slate. The main range is built in orange brick, and has a three bay front elevation, with a modern brick porch replacing an earlier example. A large 10 light rounded arch window sits beneath the mechanism for a school bell on the north gable. The second phase of construction is a slightly smaller range carrying on from the south gable of the main range, with a lean-to extension on the east elevation. {1} White's 1872 Trade Directory states that a National School was built in the village in 1864 at the expense of the lord of the manor and was 'well attended'. {2} The irregular plan form of the building appears to change between the dates of the 1887 and 1906 OS maps, suggesting alteration as well as addition to the building around this time. {3}{4}
