Full Description
Former school and schoolmaster's house. Southeastern building, possibly the schoolmaster's house, is a two storey red brick construction in Common Bond, under a pitched gabled roof of concrete tiles. It has a long porch with buff brick banding. One ridge stack. Two flat roofed dormers. Windows and doors are all modern replacements. The northwestern building may have been used as the schoolroom, and is a two storey red brick building in English Bond, under a hipped roof of pantiles. The roof height appears to have been lowered, as it now truncates the brick window surrounds on the upper storey. One ridge stack. Long porch with three-pointed arch window. Lower storey has two four-centred keystone arch windows, upper storey has three three-centred arch windows. A large modern cross-wing extension abutts the northwest elevation. {1}
White's 1856 Trade Directory states that a school had been present in the parish since 1847, and was supported by subscription. White's 1872 Trade Directory states that the current school was built in 1871 and was attended by over 70 children. {2}{3}
The school was closed in 1967, presumably due to declining attendance, and its 22 pupils were transferred to North Somercotes school. {4}
