This former barn at Otby Top Farm was the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in December 2016 to inform its proposed conversion to residential use. The barn dates to the early to mid 19th century, and first appeared on the 1847 local tithe map as the northern range of a U-shaped complex of farm buildings. Other ranges were removed or added over the years, but the north range remained largely intact. At the time of recording, only small portions of the walls of the west and east ranges remained of the former complex. The barn is a 2 storey structure, built out of random, uncoursed and angular limestone blocks with brick detailing at the corners, windows, and just below the roof line. Very little original mortar survived, and the stone had been repointed with cement. The eastern portion of the barn was roofless, while a timber-framed, hipped roof of red pantiles covered the western portion. The northern elevation of the barn had a 4 arch colonnade at ground level on the western side of the elevation, which led to 4 stalls or stables. There were windows at 1st floor level, partially infilled with modern cement breezeblocks. The eastern and western elevations were blank. The southern elevation had 2 large windows at ground level and 3 smaller windows at 1st floor level. The interior of the eastern portion of the barn was one large room with no roof. There was a door opening into the upper storey of the western portion of the barn. The western portion of the barn had the 4 stalls on the ground floor and a large open space on the 1st floor, which had possibly been used as a hayloft. {1}{2}
