Full Description
The Bungalow was an example of an early 20th century prefabricated house, located on Woodhouse Lane. It was the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in December 2015, prior to its subsequent demolition. The building first appears on the 1929 Ordnance Survey map, and predated the major use of prefabricated housing after the Second World War. The house was roughly square in plan and was built on top of a concrete plinth. It was single-storey, and had been extended to the rear over 2 or 3 phases. The roof was covered in interlocking concrete tiles and there was a single, central brick chimney. The principal elevation was the south-eastern face, which had 2 windows and a central door, all protecting by an overhanging porch. The south-west elevation was blank. The north-west elevation had evidence for 2 or 3 phases of extension, which added rooms for the kitchen and bathroom. The north-eastern elevation had a single large window which appeared to have replaced a door. Internally, the portion of the house that was the original prefabricated structure consisted of two bedrooms and an open plan living room/dining room around the free standing chimney. The walls were built out of board insulated with asbestos, and the rooms had polystyrene ceiling tiles. {1}{2}
The Bungalow was demolished in 2016, and a new dwelling now occupies its former site, as seen on the Google Maps aerial photographic layer. {3}
