Full Description

The eastern and central ranges of the main farm building complex at Hall Farm were recorded as part of a programme of historic building recording that took place in November 2017, prior to the building's conversion to residential use. The eastern range is built out of coursed limestone, with dressed stone quoins and detailing around the door and window openings. It has a pitched, timber-framed roof, covered with slates. There are 5 divisions in the eastern range, made up of several different types of cattle shelter or accommodation. The northernmost room is a cattle shelter shed, which is open on the western elevation and faces into the northern yard. There is a manger along the eastern wall, which has a stone base. There are wooden stalls at the north end of the shelter, with space for 2 cows. The next room to the south is a probable animal house. It faces into the north yard, and the western elevation has undergone extensive rebuilding in modern breezeblock. To the south is the small cowhouse, which faces into the south yard. It has a window and single door opening in the western wall, and a small window in the eastern wall with brick arch detailing. The interior has 2 stalls, with space for 4 cows, and there is a feeding passage that runs behind the stalls. This is accessed from the large cowhouse to the south, through a door in the southern elevation. There is a manger to the west of the feeding passage, which is built in wood on a solid brick base. Continuing to the south, the next room is a large cowhouse, which faces into the southern yard. It has 2 doors in the western elevation, and a single door in the eastern elevation. The interior has 3 stalls, with space for 6 cows. The stalls have wooden partitions, with a feeding passage along the eastern wall. The manger is built in wood with a solid brick base. The southernmost portion of the eastern range is a series of 4 loose boxes. These open onto the southern yard. Inside, 3 of the units have have wooden mangers, and 3 have hayracks. Each loose box has a single door opening, with a wooden door. The central range is a later addition to the farm complex. Its northern elevation is built out of coursed limestone, surmounted by semi-circular brick coping. It has 2 single door openings, one at each end, and was originally the dividing wall between the north and south wall. To create 2 additional shelter sheds for cattle, a timber-framed, pitched roof was built to the south, forming the central range. The shelter sheds are open to the south, and there is a wooden manger with a flat stone base along the south side of the northern elevation. The eastern elevation is thought to date to the mid 19th century, with the central range being constructed slightly later. {1}{2}
