Full Description
Barn, located on the south-west side of the Hollies farmstead, near Whaplode Drove. The barn was recorded as part of a programme of historic building recording in February 2017, prior to being converted into a residential dwelling. The barn is a 2 storey, single room building, with a gabled timber frame roof. It is thought that the barn would have been longer than its current extent, but that significant portions of the original building have been demolished in the past. The original roof cover is unknown, but was likely pantiles or slate based on the angle of the pitch, and the modern asbestos sheeting had been removed prior to recording. The barn is built in brick, laid in alternating 3 courses of stretchers and 1 course of headers in English Garden Wall bond. The eastern elevation has a small ventilation aperture in the upper portion of the elevation, and has an addition that has been partially demolished. The northern elevation has a central door opening, covered with a timber door. The southern elevation has a door opening that has been infilled with modern mid-20th century brick. The roofline of a demolished extension is visible in the brickwork of the western elevation. The interior of the barn has been whitewashed and has a modern concrete floor. Two modern, timber framed outbuildings, one clad in corrugated iron sheet and the other in timber weatherboarding, are located to the north of the barn. These are not of historic significance, and will be demolished during the development process. {1}{2}
