Full Description

Former school and schoolmaster’s house at School Lane. The building was constructed as a Wesleyan school in 1856, with help from a government grant. More formal management was established in 1873, with the election of the Tetney School Board. The school was renamed as Tetney Council School in 1903, and later renamed as the Tetney County Primary School. A detailed account of the school and its management until 1977 has been written by a former Deputy Headteacher. The school is thought to have closed soon after this, with the construction of new school buildings on Humberston Road. The former school building here were subsequently converted to residential use. Historic Ordnance Survey mapping of this area shows little change to the layout of the school during its years of operation. The buildings have an irregular L-shaped plan form, and are constructed of red brick laid in English Garden Wall Bond, with pitched gabled roofs of slate. The roof of the former schoolmaster’s house is half hipped, and appears to be a modern replacement. Two brick buttresses are on the eastern elevation of the south range, close to the main entrance, which has a small turret over with steeply sloped slate roof, crosslet embrasures, and lancet window. The southern gable has a large pointed arch window, with other windows being 2 over 2 awning windows. The large modern extension to the rear of the property is a late 20th century or early 21st century addition. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
