Full Description
The Three Tuns public house was the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in September 2016 to inform proposed alterations and its change of use. The public house is thought to have been established in the mid 19th century, probably in 1842, when it is listed as being in operation in a county gazetteer, but not named in the tithe award document produced earlier in the same year. It had been created from the conversion of part of a block of earlier dwellings on the site, which are thought to date to the early 19th century. These buildings faced on to the High Street and formed the earliest part of the public house. They were built of brick that has since been rendered with a pebble-dash mixture, and featured pitched pantile roofs. The public house was substantially enlarged in the 20th century, with a number of large, rendered brick extensions being added to the rear (south). Significant internal alterations were also conducted throughout the 20th century, to the extent that much of the original layout and fittings of the early structure have been lost. The original staircases in the earliest part of the building are still extant, however, and much of the first floor arrangement in this part of the building has been preserved. {1}{2}{3}
