Full Description

The complex of former farm buildings at Whitehouse Farm were the subject of a programme of historic building recording, conducted in November 2016 to inform their proposed conversion to residential use. The complex comprises two adjoining ranges of mid to late 19th century structures, arranged in an L-shaped plan around a central courtyard, typical of the established High Farming movement. All of the structures were built of handmade red brick, laid in an English Garden Wall bond, and feature pitched roofs of slate, although this had been replaced with corrugated asbestos sheeting at one part of the complex. The western range is of two storeys, and was comprised of an open barn at the south-western end, and a cart shed with granary space above this at the north-eastern end. An iron weather vane is attached to the top of the south-western gable, and iron lettering attached to the side of this gable gives the initials 'R.C.' and a date of 1869. The initials are thought to be those of a Richard Cooper, who is listed as a local farmer and carrier in the 1851 census returns for Gedney Hill, and who likely farmed this holding and possibly built the structures at that time. Wide double doors, now blocked, would have given access to the barn space, which is thought to have possibly functioned as a chaff house or feed mixing area. The northern range is single-storey, and was comprised of a former cow house at the north-western end, with a stable area in the middle and probable former tack room at the south-eastern end. The floor and lower walls of the cow house had been rendered with concrete, and stalls for the cattle would have been located along the rear, north-eastern wall. The remains of a wooden manger and hayrack were still present within the stable, along with the original sloping stone floor. The buildings have been subject to some degree of alteration, with the blocking of many of the original doors and windows, and the insertion of new openings in several places. {1}{2}
