Full Description

A partially extant 19th century farmstead with a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings, with the farmhouse detached from the main working complex and in an isolated location {1}. Two buildings, both with attached outbuildings or lean-tos are shown in the Ordnance Survey map of 1888 {2}, although the wider plot had its boundaries redrawn and one of the original buildings demolished by 1905 at which point the plot is shown as being orchard {3}. The surviving building on the plot appears to have been built or rebuilt in 1902 with a plaque built into the east-facing wall reading “T W; Uptodate; 1902”. The building takes its name from one of the cultivar of potato grown locally, Mr A. Findlay’s “Up-To-Date” varietal, during the Great Potato Boom c.189X-1904; the proceeds of the Great Potato Boom were used to build the cottage {4}.
