There is the text 'Burial Ground' at the south-west corner of Burton Wood in Gate Burton parish. No other reference to a burial ground at this location has been found. It does not appear on any of the 19th or 20th century Ordnance Survey maps, and only appears on the later digital OS mapping that dates from the digitisation of the OS mapping in the 1990s. This text is present on the OS landline data with a file date of 2002 and on the later OS Mastermap dataset. It is most unlikely that a burial ground was present but unnoticed by Ordnance Survey surveyors until the last quarter of the 20th century. The OS surveying was mostly carried out using rectified aerial photographs from 1945 onwards and being in a wood the site of any burial ground is unlikely to have been visible on aerial photographs. The OS mapping data was digitised from published Ordnance Survey large-scale maps. The OS 1:2500 scale map dating to 1974-75 has the words 'Burton Wood' in the same place as the words 'Burial Ground' appear on the digital mapping. Consequently, this 'burial ground' text is almost certainly an error generated during the OS digitisation process. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
