Full Description
Former school. An L-plan red brick building under a gabled tile roof. A band of yellow brick diapering runs around the building at eaves height, and a decorative course of yellow and black bricks runs beneath the roof on the gable end. The gables also have concrete corbel shoulders. An eight course brick plinth is capped by black brick or tile coping. The windows appear to be modern uPVC replacements but sit in the original openings. The window lintel is made of painted dogtoothed bricks. {1}
On 2nd December 1870, Sir Thomas Beckett signed a Conveyance document granting some of his land to 'the Minister and Churchwardens of the Parish of Springthorpe' and their successors on which to erect a village school. The school was to 'promote the education of the poor on the principles of the Established Church' according to the principles set out by the National Society. The school was constructed in 1872. In 1899 it was decided to make arrangements to have the school enlarged to accommodate 94 pupils. A Mr. E.T. Green of Silver Street in Gainsborough was appointed as the architect. The size of the school increased from 125 square feet to 287 square feet. The modifications were largely concentrated on the south side of the school, with the ocre decorative brickwork added. 70 students were on the school register in 1930, but the school closed in 1948 as part of general reorganisation of education in the Lindsey County area. The building was briefly used as a warehouse, before being converted in 1951 for use as the village hall. {2}
Plans for the proposed Springthorpe National school, dating from 1871, are in the Lincolnshire Archives. {3}
The school is depicted on the 1887 Ordnance Survey map of Springthorpe but is interestingly not marked as a school (though this oversight might be due to the label being obscured by a break in the map on School Lane). It is marked as a school on the 1906 map. {4}{5}
