Full Description

Former school and schoolmaster's house, built in 1853 and still with the T-plan form seen on the 1887 and the 1906 OS maps. Converted into semi-detached houses in the late 20th century. It is unclear how much of the original structure remains. {1}{2}{3}{4} In White's 1856 Trade Directory, a Henry Aldridge and a Mrs. Aldridge are listed as 'national school' in terms of their occupation. At this time the school was attended by about 80 children. {5} According to documents held in the Lincolnshire Archives, the school was opened in 1853 and was known as Upton-cum-Kexby National School until at least 1903. By 1910, and until at least the 1930s, it was known as Kexby and Upton CE School in official sources. However, the name Upton-cum-Kexby CE School was used locally by 1929 and officially by 1948. Senior pupils appear to have been transferred to the Benjamin Adlard and Lea Road Secondary Modern Schools in Gainsborough on 20 June 1947. The school was closed in 1971, because of the poor condition of the building, with the remaining pupils transferred to Lea CE School. {6}
