Full Description
A dump of medieval iron working waste was recorded in this location in December 2011, during archaeological monitoring of development to the rear of 7 St Leonard's Street. The dump contained pieces of common slag from both the smelting and smithing processes, and fragments of hammerscale, and would support previously identified evidence for medieval iron working in this part of Stamford. Three small sherds of likely 12th century Stamford ware pottery were recovered from the deposit, along with a few fragments of animal bone, likely from medium sized mammals, such as sheep or goat. A few redeposited fragments of medieval Bourne ware-type pottery and tile were also recovered from the overlying subsoils. {1}{2}
