Description

A historic building survey was undertaken at agricultural buildings in Wharton, prior to their conversion to residential dwellings. The study area comprised three ranges of buildings around a crewyard enclosed by a boundary wall on its eastern side. The complex appears to have been historically associated with Yew Tree Cottage, a detached house to the east. Both the house and the West Range were demolished in the late 20th century. The surviving North Range is a two storey barn with animal shelter or stable and storage areas, with a north-south aligned two bay cart shed appended to the north elevation. The South Range comprises two animal shelters or stables and a smithy with in situ furnace and chimney. 20th century alteration of the complex included the enclosure of the former cart shed with breeze blocks, and the addition of brick and concrete food troughs in the animal shelters of both ranges. {1}{2}
