Description

A historic building survey was undertaken at a former agricultural building at Ivy House Farm, Wainfleet St Mary, prior to its demolition. The surveyed building was a mid-19th century three storey red brick construction, under a pitched half-hipped slate roof. The building had a large sliding metal door in the centre of the east elevation and an infilled door in the centre of the west elevation, suggesting this may have been used for threshing at one time. A large opening to eaves height at the south end of the west elevation, now partially infilled, was once used for loading grain onto carts from the first floor. The north elevation had a loading door open to the second floor, with winch supports above, suggesting that this space may have been used to store goods. Originally part of a larger mid-19th century farming complex, including a U-shaped group of building around a south facing crewyard, typical of the 'High Farming' movement of that time. Only the two-storey cartshed, formerly connected to the three storey building and forming the north range of the complex, remains. The cartshed is built of red brick, under a pitched hipped tile roof, and has a five bay cart arcade in its north elevation. The other buildings in the complex appear to have been demolished in the 2010s. {1}
