LINCOLN SK9771SE FREE SCHOOL LANE 1941-1/12/118 (East side) 02/10/69 Public Library II Public library. 1914. By Sir R Blomfield. Ashlar and brick, with hipped slate roofs and leaded dome. French Baroque style. EXTERIOR: channelled rustication, eaves cornice, quoins, coped parapet with baluster panels. Windows are mainly glazing bar sashes with projecting architraves with keystones. Projecting square domed centre, 2 storeys, with urn finials to the parapet, topped with an open cupola. Projecting arched moulded doorcase with enriched keystone and inscribed lintel. Above it, an oval window flanked by festoons and beyond, single windows. Above again, a window with segmental pediment, with a crest in the apron. Flanking wings, single storey, have 4 windows each. Projecting square terminal pavilions have each a single window, and ball finials to the parapet. Each return has 2 similarly articulated windows. INTERIOR: vestibule has plaster wall panels, dentilled cornice, and 3 doorcases with eared architraves and oval fanlights. On the east side, a Doric colonnade, 4 bays, with a central round arched opening. Screen wall with pilasters and a central round headed window flanked by single doorways. Book room has plaster cross beam ceiling with a central light. Fitted oak bookcases. Some similar bookcases in the smaller specialist book rooms.
