Description

SOUTH WILLINGHAM MAIN STREET TF 18 SE (west side) 2/42 Church of St. Martin 9.3.67 G.V. II* Parish church. Late C13, mid C14, C16, 1838. Coursed greenstone rubble blocks. Ironstone rubble and ashlar, limestone rubble and ashlar. Lead roofs with stone coped east gable and east cross finials. West tower, nave, chancel. Mid C14 west tower with plinth, moulded string course and diagonal 3 stage buttresses. West doorway restored in C19 with pointed, moulded head and jambs in one, C19 hood mould and plank doors. Lancet above with C19 hood mould. North side with small round, cusped window. South side with small rectangular light with chamfered surround. Moulded string course defines bell stage with single cusped plaque set beneath in centre of west, north and south sides. Bell openings on all 4 sides each of 2 lights, west side with cusped, ogeeheads and quatrefoil, north side with cusped round heads with vertical tracery, east side with cusped ogee heads and mouchettes and south side with shallow, pointed cusped head with vertical tracery. All the bell openings with hood moulds and large head label stops. Moulded eaves above and clocks on all 4 sides. Battlements and corner pinnacles. Early C14 north side of nave restored in C19. Fragmentary plinth and single 2 stage buttresses at each end. 4 pointed windows with C19 Y tracery and hood moulds. Late C13 north side of chancel with pointed window of 3 lancets with plate traceried quatrefoil and hood mould. Moulded C13 string course running below from nave to east end of window. East end of chancel with pointed early C13 window with 3 lancets restored in C19 with C13 plate traceried roundel and C13 hood mould. South side of chancel with C13 string course running under pointed C13 window with 3 lancets, plate traceried quatrefoil and hood mould. South side of C14 nave with single 2 stage buttresses at each end, and 4 pointed windows with C19 Y tracery and hood moulds. Doorway to west of c.1300 with pointed chamfered head, chamfered jambs, moulded imposts, hood mould and plank door. Small C16 rectangular mullion window above with hood mould. C14 interior tower arch with pointed head, moulded head and jambs in one, hood mould and plank doors. Pointed window above with chamfered surround and hood mould. C19 chancel arch with pointed head, moulded head and jambs in one, hood mould and block label stops. C15 rood screen heavily restored in C19, of 3 large pointed openings flanked by single narrow pointed openings. Lower traceried C19 panels, upper open work C15 traceried panels with cusped rosettes, lower sections of C15 coving, upperparts C19. Panel of 3 quatrefoils under north east window. C19 richly carved reredos with Evangelists and central cusped and finialled niche. C19 altar rail, lectern, pulpit. C15 font heavily restored in C19 with square bowl with 2 large quatrefoils on each side, on tall shaft of 8 filleted columns. C20 pews. C19 tie beam roofs. Various small, plain C19 marble or brass monuments. Listing NGR: TF1950083331
